Traditions and Folklore in Friesland

Riding in a “sjees”

A couple in traditional Frisian costume riding in a “sjees”, a two-wheeled cart pulled by a black Frisian horse, turns from the Jacobstraat into the Voorstraat in the city of Harlingen during yearly festivities. The Frisian “sjees” (the word comes from the French “chaise”, chair) used to be the vehicle to take a rich farmer and his wife to church on a Sunday. It features two high wheels and is often richly decorated.
